Ms. Margie- Pre-Primary Head Teacher

Please share a little background about yourself:

My name is Margie and I am a Lead Pre-Primary (Toddler) Teacher in our Garden Street Lofts building. I grew up in Manhattan for 21 years and then moved to Bergenfield, New Jersey. I have been an educator for over 25 years and have worked at HMS since inception. I have two daughters, who are 34 and 28 years old. My oldest daughter is married with twin boys and they are my everything. My fiancé, Nelson and I have been together for 5 years. He packs my breakfast and lunch and is a wonderful help with my family.

What inspired you to becoming a teacher?

After having my own children, I ran a small day care out of my home. This experience motivated me to further my studies to become a formal educator and sparked my interest in various educational philosophies, specifically Montessori. I also was incorporating Montessori methods with my own children. They loved to help me prepare food in the kitchen and now my grandchildren love to help me as well.

What is your favorite area in the Montessori classroom?

My favorite area is Language. I enjoy seeing the growth from September to June. Many of the children come to me with very little language and they leave speaking. Using the Montessori materials helps facilitate this tremendous growth period in a child's development.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy taking my grandsons to the park, the zoo and preparing meals in the kitchen with them. Nelson and I like walking around Central Park and we try to visit a new restaurant as often as we can. A passion of ours is also the theatre. On our most recent visit we saw Beautiful.
